She’s Her Own CEO® Reading for Success: Five (5) Minutes

For this edition of the She’s Her Own CEO Guest Interview, we are excited to introduce the Editor-in-Chief of SHAPE Magazine,

Elizabeth Goodman Artis!

Elizabeth is a highly skilled and dynamic print and digital content executive and leader with 15-plus years of editorial and management experience at some of the leading large-circulation consumer magazine brands in the country, including Prevention, Fitness, Cosmopolitan and Glamour.  Elizabeth is currently the top editor for SHAPE, the second largest women’s lifestyle magazine in the U.S, with a print circulation of 2.6 million.  She was honored as one of MIN’s Most Intriguing People in Media, 2015.

Kathryn Brooks, She’s Her Own CEO®:  Hi Elizabeth, I was so honored when you accepted our interview request.  As a leading voice at one of the top national magazines, please tell us the educational and career experiences that have made you into the fabulous and successful CEO that you are today.

Elizabeth Goodman Artis, EIC, SHAPE Magazine: I started my career at Glamour magazine right out of college.  I was there for six years with positions of increased responsibility.  From there I worked my way up the proverbial masthead, with positions at Time Out New York, Cosmopolitan, and Fitness, among others.  In 2014 I was named Editor-in-Chief of SHAPE.

Kathryn Brooks, She’s Her Own CEO®: Tell us how you Lead, Provide, and Create in your professional and/or personal world.

Elizabeth Goodman Artis, EIC, SHAPE Magazine:  Leadership can be tricky.  In my experience it’s about balance.  My role is to create a clear vision of what I want for this brand and then empower my staff to execute it.  I believe deeply in clarity and transparency.  No one is a mind reader.  If I can’t articulate an idea or concept clearly and articulately then the idea isn’t done yet.

Kathryn Brooks, She’s Her Own CEO®:  Being the CEO of your world can take many forms (for example, volunteering in your community, holding a formal corporate position, engaging in creative pursuits, or being a reliable mom/sister/daughter).  In your opinion, what is the best way to achieve success and to become the boss of your world?

Elizabeth Goodman Artis, EIC, SHAPE Magazine:  Being genuine and willing to soul search at all times, whether that’s in the emotional vein or the creative/skill arena. Constant self-exploration is the key to any success, in relationships, in business, as a human on this planet.  I ask myself, how can I do better? Where are the pockets of stagnation and stasis?  Or conversely, maybe I’m focusing too much on certain things or situations that don’t serve me well.

Kathryn Brooks, She’s Her Own CEO®:  Any additional advice you can share with motivated, aspirational ladies?

Elizabeth Goodman Artis, EIC, SHAPE Magazine:   Find what you’re really good at and nurture that. Know your weaknesses and find ways to bolster them.  Be careful of hollow platitudes about success.  It looks different on everybody.  Learn to read a situation and pick your battles.  Be as kind as much as possible and try to understand other’s intentions.  Be wary but open.  People are the key to success—do what you can to separate the good ones from the bad ones and figure out how to work with all of them.  Stay even keeled, even if it’s not quite your nature.  The ability to stay calm and not overreact or underreact in any situation is a powerful personal attribute.  I try hard to cultivate that, and I while I don’t always succeed, it is my life-long goal.

Kathryn Brooks, She’s Her Own CEO®:  Thank you, Elizabeth!  Those are great tips and you are an inspiration for success.  You are so correct:  success takes a different form and path for each person.  And maintaining professional relationships, whether in the corporate or entrepreneurial world, is a concept we talk about often here at She’s Her Own CEO®.

Your mark on SHAPE Magazine is so apparent, as it is an inspirational, practical, and beautiful publication to read each month.
