For this edition of the She’s Her Own CEO^® Guest Interview, we are excited to introduce you to Vic Micolucci!

Vic is an award-winning investigative reporter and morning anchor for WJXT-TV4 (News4Jax) in Jacksonville, Florida.

 

Kathryn Brooks, She’s Her Own CEO^®: Hi Vic, thanks for speaking with me today. Please share your résumé highlights! What are the educational and career experiences that have made you into the successful CEO of Your Life that you are today?

Vic Micolucci, WJXT Anchor: I grew up in Jacksonville and was always curious. However, I didn’t know where that would lead me. I considered law enforcement, psychology, science. After high school, I went to the University of Florida and fell into journalism. I started as a volunteer at the public radio station in Gainesville, then went on to intern at the Florida Times-Union. I got a spot at the public TV station in Gainesville in sports. First photographer, then reporter and eventually sports director. Over the summers, I interned in Jacksonville at WJXT and freelanced for various outlets. All the while, I was running my small business, a DJ company. I started that at 14 and never let it go. It’s a hobby and a creative outlet that keeps me busy to this day.

After college, I was fortunate to get a job at WJXT, the station I grew up watching. I started as a weekend assignment editor and “one-man-band” journalist. Over the years, I moved to weekday reporter and eventually morning anchor and a member of the investigative team. I love telling stories about my community to my community. I’ve had the opportunity to report from around the world on some of the biggest current events of our times. I’ve also kept DJing. I continue to perform at weddings, charity events and large parties regularly.

 

Kathryn Brooks, She’s Her Own CEO^®: That is a fantastic educational story showcasing the power of internships and early entrepreneurship success! I also had a music business as a teenager which taught me about public relations, scheduling, finance, and operations management.

Here on ShesHerOwnCEO.com, we often discuss techniques one can use to Lead, Provide, and Create™ in his or her world, both professionally and personally. Vic, Please share your favorite example! Maybe it’s how you impact the world through storytelling, or is it something beyond that?

Vic Micolucci, WJXT Anchor: I’m fortunate enough to work with a wide variety of people, both in my newsroom and in the community. At the station, teamwork is key and knowing everyone’s important role is crucial. I try to foster others’ creativity and passion. This ranges from interns to photographers to other on-air journalists. Over the years, I’ve learned it’s better to be a leader through example rather than preaching. I’ve also become very active at charity events. I use this as a way to connect with the community I’m a part of and to lead people to be involved, to give back and to make a difference.

 

Kathryn Brooks, She’s Her Own CEO^®: Your charity work and willingness to share your public platform are certainly admirable, Vic!  As you know, being the CEO of your world can take many forms. Please share some other examples of your community involvement and helping others!

Vic Micolucci, WJXT Anchor: I truly felt I was making headway when I learned to give back to the community around me. And often. A very successful colleague’s wife told me that’s the best way to move forward in life. It worked because I was raised doing mission trips and volunteering. I’ve been able to make incredible friendships and connections that have lasted for years. In addition to friendships, I get asked multiple times a week to speak at events, to DJ or to report on important issues. It’s been rewarding in more ways than I can count and has helped me personally and professionally.

 

Kathryn Brooks, She’s Her Own CEO^®: We would love to hear more about your music interests, how you got into DJ’ing, and how being creative makes you a better journalist!

Vic Micolucci, WJXT Anchor: My love for music started early. My dad played in a band through high school, college and medical school. When I was growing up, he’d often have gigs with some of his old band mates. I tried piano, guitar and the drums, but none were ever my strong suit. However, as a young teen, I started to take an interest in sound, lighting and mixing. I learned early in life how to be an entrepreneur and an artist. Although I didn’t know it, it was also preparing me for my career in journalism as I learned to grab the attention of audiences. No matter what your trade is, it’s about connecting with people.

 

Kathryn Brooks, She’s Her Own CEO^®: Any additional advice you can share with those who want to achieve more in their life?

Vic Micolucci, WJXT Anchor: My best advice is to take risks. Break out of your comfort zone. Don’t say no to an opportunity. I’ve missed opportunities in the past because I was too timid. Nothing comes easy. Work, work, work. Success isn’t found Monday through Friday working 9-5. You have to be willing to work around the clock and make sacrifices. If that happens, success will follow.
